Prose Poem March 3, 2010

Besotted
Nothing can compare to the inexplicable moment when you drink in the new smell. It lingers on your hands, hands that seem too rough to touch the softest skin. As you inhale, the idea of new life warms you and it seems impossible to let go of the bundle snuggled into your arms. How perfect the dainty nose and whispers of lashes that frame the sleeping eyes. The bundle whimpers slightly, stretches against the swaddling and two tiny fists escape. The fingers are impossibly dainty and suddenly extend, then release in a considerate and thoughtful expression as they lay on the chubby and gorgeous cheek. You drink her in and kiss your new niece.

    Hi J!

I had to choose this one since I know how much this time meant to you! Besotted is a great title that really gets across the feelings of holding that tiny baby. Your phrases really slow down the moment and capture the mood.

Jessica, being an aunt to five nieces and four nephews I know all too well how smitten you become with a sibling’s child. Your description of your niece perfectly illustrates the wondrous qualities of a new baby.

  3. AHHH that moment of newness and the smell – you have captured this moment so beautifully Jess.
